In March 2022, the GAA launched a call to action to the profession in response to the nature crisis. Published in anticipation of adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) at COP15 (the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity), in December 2022, the statement was a recognition that businesses and the accountancy profession need to be part of the solution.

The GAA’s 10 member bodies made these four commitments:

1. working with governments to establish and align coherent policy frameworks that accelerate business action to reverse the process of nature loss;
2. building our members’ knowledge, understanding and awareness of nature loss;
3. providing our members with the training, support and infrastructure to value and embed nature in decision-making and disclosure; and
4. supporting the alignment of consistent global regulation and globally accepted disclosure frameworks that integrate nature, people, and climate into corporate reporting.

Two years later, as the world’s governments gather again at COP 16 in Colombia (between 21 October and 1 November 2024), to review progress towards the GBF goals, we have published a report that takes stock of the GAA’s collective accomplishments against its four nature commitments.

The report considers relevant trends affecting the profession – such as the growing market trend towards transparency, reporting and regulation on nature-related issues. It also sets out actions that the GAA and its members will take to help further accelerate collective progress towards our nature commitments, in line with the GBF. Our ambition is that the pathway to 2030 will help to galvanize further action by the profession (including by the GAA and its member bodies).
